With the last hint of chocolate dying on her tongue, Phoebe placed her empty bowl next to Zach’s on the table, her pulse flying. ‘That was delicious. Thanks, Zach.’

He was still staring at her as if he was poised to pounce. But maybe it was her imagination fuelled by hormones.

Except Zach had barely touched his own dessert while they’d talked about the baby. But he’d watched her eat hers, his eyes following the spoon to her mouth as if he wanted a taste from the same spoon, or from her lips.

Because he was still silent, because the chocolate, the hormones, Zach’s proximity and their growing closeness had all conspired to make her unbelievingly aroused, she filled the conversational gap with nervous chatter.

‘The pregnancy hormones have given me terrible chocolate cravings,’ she explained, brushing a speck of lint from her trouser leg, thinking of the violent mood swings and mental gymnastics she’d experienced since he’d arrived in Sydney. ‘Perhaps because chocolate helps with the random bouts of inexplicable tears.’

She chuckled but Zach just stared, his head tilting as if in empathy.

She’d almost cried at least twice during the meal, once when she’d tried to visualise seventeen-year-old Zach trapped in the middle of his parents’ divorce and again when he’d carefully tucked their baby’s scan photo back into his wallet with as much care and tenderness as he’d used when he held newborn babies.

Why wasn’t he saying anything?

‘—although sadly, chocolate doesn’t seem to help with the hormonal fluctuations,’ she blabbered on. ‘No one talks about that particular pregnancy side effect. I am constantly horn—Oh!’

She stopped talking, her face flaming as she realised that she was over-sharing, confessing intimate details of her overactive libido to the sexiest man alive, a man she knew could cure all of her pent-up frustration.

‘Sorry, I forgot that you’re not one of my girlfriends.’ She fanned her face, embarrassed.

‘Don’t apologise,’ he said, his voice gruff and his pupils dilated. ‘We said we’d be honest. You can tell me anything, Phoebe.’

‘Can I?’ She stared, lost in his stare, a victim of the undeniable sexual tension that had ensnared her since the minute Zach had walked into the OR that first day.

He nodded, watching her lips as if waiting for a confession. But was it wise to raise the subject of the chemistry they were clearly both trying to ignore, to admit that she still wanted him as badly as the night of her birthday, perhaps even more, to suggest that they resume their fling for what time he had left in Sydney?

Exhaling a shaky breath, she stopped fighting. ‘Because I’d have to tell you that I can’t stop thinking about that incredible night in Brisbane.’

She might have imagined his groan; it was so low. ‘Only if I can tell you I can’t either.’

Light-headed, she held his stare, knowing that they were playing with fire, that she might open a door that might be difficult to close when the time came for Zach to leave. ‘I still want you,’ she whispered, ‘but I’m scared to complicate things.
